Students in the UK apply to medical school after completing their A-levels at secondary school (age 18 y.o) Students who aren’t from the UK but who do A-levels as well eg. Hong Kong, Mauritius, Singapore, Sri Lanka etc. etc. can also apply for entry into the UK medical schools after comnpleting their A-levels.

The UK universities will also accept IB (international baccalaureate) qualifications which is an alternative to A-levels in many countries.

Medical school in the UK/Ireland is usually 5 years (2 years pre-clinical, 3 years clinical) but there are some schools that have a 6 year course (with the 1st year being the equivalent of pre-med ie. basic sciences).

EDIT: forgot to say that most schools allow their students to do an intercalated degree (usually done after the first 2 pre-clinical years) where the student takes a year out and does a year of eg. biochemistry/microbiology/neuroscience etc. etc. and then rejoins the year below for the remaining 3 clinical years. The student thus gets to graduate with 2 degrees (Medicine + eg. Microbiology)…great value for money :)

    Eh. Hoped that helped.
